For many years, MLT has been a trusted advisor to stakeholders
in Canada’s energy industry. We regularly advise public
and private entities, governments, Crown corporations, other
government agencies and First Nations on all aspects
of the energy business including the oil and natural gas, oilfield
services, electricity and alternate and renewable energy sectors.
Oil & Natural Gas
MLT has extensive experience with all aspects
of the oil and natural gas business, including issues commonly
encountered in the exploration, development, production, processing,
storage, transportation, distribution and marketing of oil, natural
gas and related by-products. In addition to our experience with
the acquisition, operation and divestment of exploration and
production assets (including numerous financings, securitizations,
restructuring transactions and corporate reorganizations), we
have provided advice with respect to several significant projects
including the Hibernia offshore oil production project, the Lloydminster
heavy oil upgrader and the Co-op refinery and upgrader in Regina.
We have also advised pipeline companies and shippers with respect
to pipeline product transportation and regarding the acquisition,
divestment, development, construction and financing of several
significant pipeline projects including the Alliance, Express,
Keystone, Producers and Trans-Canada pipeline systems.
From a regulatory law perspective, MLT has extensive experience
dealing with the regulation and de-regulation of assets and
markets in Western Canada. We have acted in natural gas utility
rate
applications before regulators and review proceedings and have
provided advice with respect to cost of capital issues, codes
of conduct and rate unbundling. Our practice also extends to
hearings before surface rights authorities where we regularly
represents both landowners and industry in the resolution of
surface rights disputes.
Oilfield Services
We count among our clients a number of private and public companies
that provide services to the oil and gas sector, including drilling
contractors, well service providers and other oilfield service
suppliers. Our services to these clients include general corporate
and commercial advice, advice on contractual issues and support
in the event of litigation or alternate dispute resolution.
Electricity
MLT is a leading Western Canadian law firm in the electricity
sector. We have advised a wide variety of clients regarding the
development, construction and financing of power generation and
power transmission projects. We have also provided advice with
respect to power purchase contracts, project procurement, the
acquisition of “ancillary” services, the development,
review and revision of operating rules and codes of conduct for
market participants and the acquisition and divestment of power
generation assets.
From a regulatory law perspective, we have been involved with
various aspects of the regulation and deregulation of the electricity
sector in Canada, including mandates to act in connection with
various regulatory applications and providing advice
on compliance, rate applications and reviews, cost
of
capital issues and rate unbundling. We have also provided advice
to a number of industry participants on dispute
resolution, including litigation support.
Alternate and Renewable Energy
Western Canada has abundant sources of alternate and renewable
energy, including wind, solar, hydro, biomass and other agricultural-based
alternative fuel sources. As a leading Western Canadian law firm,
MLT is uniquely situated to provide advice with respect to the
development and commercialization of these alternate and renewable
energy sources. We have provided advice with respect to the development,
acquisition and divestment of wind farm projects and the development
and operation of existing and proposed biodiesel facilities.
We have also participated on industry committees addressing issues
related to carbon capture and storage and carbon emission credits
trading. Working with our Agribusiness Law practice group, members
of MLT’s Energy Law practice group are also uniquely qualified
to provide information and advice with respect to the development
of agricultural-based alternate and renewable energy projects.
In a world with increasing needs for alternate and renewable
sources of energy, MLT is the firm of choice to advise on these
types of projects in Western Canada. |
