Jim Kerby's primary commercial
practice focus is corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions.
Jim has worked extensively with business organizations of all
types and sizes, including corporations, general and limited
partnerships and joint ventures. He works hard to understand
his clients' business environment in order to provide timely,
concise and practical business and legal advice.
Jim recently played a lead role in the successful restructuring
and refinancing of one of Saskatchewan's largest private corporations,
and has participated in a number of major asset acquisitions
and financings. As part of his corporate and commercial practice,
Jim also advises a number of companies in the value-added agriculture
and agricultural biotechnology sectors.
Jim's experience with MLT's Aboriginal Law Practice Group is
also extensive. He currently advises a number of First Nation
clients and their economic development units on a wide variety
of business law issues. In addition to the structuring and financing
of First Nations' business ventures, Jim is experienced in Treaty
Land Entitlement claims. He was lead counsel in the 1992 settlement
of the outstanding Treaty Land Entitlements of 27 First Nations
in Saskatchewan. The resulting Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement
'Framework Agreement' involved cash compensation of over $455
million and provided participating First Nations with the ability
to acquire up to 1.6 million acres of land.
