Rangi
Jeerakathil practices principally in Regulatory Law, First
Nations Law and Environmental Law. Rangi has acted as lead
counsel in litigated regulatory hearings before the Alberta
Energy and Utilities Board involving matters related to the
setting of utility rates including revenue requirement, cost
of service, rate design and codes of conduct. He has also appeared
before the Northwest Territories' Public Utilities Board. Rangi
advises clients on gas and electricity de-regulation and in
all matters related to regulatory compliance in the natural
gas industry in Alberta. Rangi has also acted in hearings before
the AEUB for the approval of power plants, transmission lines
and oil facilities. Rangi has also advised clients on co-generation,
power purchase agreements, wind and hydro power projects, and
on associated joint venture agreements. Rangi advises clients
on environmental and regulatory compliance and has appeared
before the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board.
Rangi’s
experience with the legal aspects of the energy sector includes
work with First Nations. He has advised Aboriginal groups and
land owners on issues related to the construction and operation
of a northern route gas pipeline project in the MacKenzie Valley.
Rangi also advises First Nations on a range of other matters
including rights of way, elections, reserve lands and general
corporate / commercial issues. He has litigated specific claims
before the Indian Claims Commission and has advised First Nation
clients on constitutional law issues.
Rangi is an experienced litigator who has appeared before the Alberta Court
of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Alberta Environmental
Appeals Board, the National Energy Board, the Saskatchewan Court of
Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has
also advised clients in relation to electric rights of way across lands and
with respect to a greenfield transmission pipeline proposal in Northern Canada.
