MLT Wins Saskatoon United Way's Most Prestigious Award
At an awards ceremony hosted by the Saskatoon United Way on
January 28, 2004 MLT's Saskatoon office was awarded the C.J.
(Kirk) Kirkpatrick trophy "in recognition of Outstanding
Leadership in an employee campaign resulting in
significant growth of the Leadership Program." MLT increased
its Leadership Giving Program to 11 Leaders, 6 Everyday Heroes
and 2 Friends
in 2003. The campaign raised a total of $28,000, a 45.2% increase
over 2002, making MLT #1
in
the Saskatoon Professions
Division.
Our Saskatoon office also celebrated its 5th consecutive

at least a 90% participation rate for employee donations and
a minimum $50 per capita average gift, is
the highest award an employee campaign can receive.

Maurice Laprairie, Q.C. Noted for Role in One of Top
Decisions of 2003
Maurice Laprairie, Q.C., head of MLT's Regina Litigation Group,
is cited in the January 2004 issue of LEXPERT: The Business Magazine
for Lawyers for his lead role in Federation of Law Societies
of Canada v. Canada. Mr. Laprairie directed litigation in 14
Canadian jurisdictions which attacked provisions of the Proceeds
of Crime (Money Laundering) Act requiring lawyers to report “suspicious
transactions”. It was argued that the provisions impeded
the ability of lawyers to act independently on behalf of their
clients. Mr. Laprairie is quoted in LEXPERT noting that, "an
independent Bar is a cornerstone of Canadian society and Canadian
business" (p.88).
Seven Canadian courts heard the challenge and all seven granted
interim relief from the legislation. As a result of the court
challenge the Government repealed the suspicious transaction
reporting requirements and a consent order made any further legislation
in the area subject to the consent of the law societies. The
decision is named as one of 2003's Top 10 Litigation Decisions
in Canada.
