of Courts in Saskatchewan and has also made regular appearances

Saskatchewan.

to the partnership. Doug

Clark (Calgary) have all demonstrated professional excellence
and a commitment to providing exceptional client service. Noting
the contributions of each new partner to the firm and the profession,
Don Wilson commented, "the quality of these three talented
individuals is indicative of the high calibre of lawyers MLT
continues to attract to its practice. Though it was coincidental,
the fact that we are able to admit a new partner in each of our
three offices demonstrates the efforts our lawyers are making
across the firm to meet the high standards of service we demand
of them."
Harold
MacKay, O.C., Q.C. to speak at Conference Board of
Canada conference on "Canada's Competitiveness in
a Global Financial Marketplace"
Harold MacKay, O.C., Q.C., Vice-Chair of the Wise
Persons' Committee on reforming Canada's financial services regulatory
environment, will discuss the question: Does Regulatory Structure
of Canada's Equity Market Need to be Changed?"
Canada is the only G7 country without a national
securities commission. Many feel that the country's 13 commissions
are "inconvenient, inefficient, and too expensive, and that
they impose a competitive disadvantage on Canadian issuers" (conference
brochure).
Some hold the view that a more harmonized system
would better allow regional issues to be considered and provide
better protection for junior companies. It could also create
a competitive advantage for Canada's markets by fostering the
growth of regional niche markets.
The conference will be held on December 4-5, 2003
at the Renaissance Toronto Hotel at Skydome in downtown Toronto.

the Conference Board of Canada on September 19. He spoke on emerging
trends in corporate consultation and engagement with Aboriginal
communities across Canada. His presentation addressed such things

relation to developments that affect treaty or Aboriginal rights
and the ways in which corporations can improve their business
relationships with First Nations.

to the Government of Canada on current issues in that sector.

Manley as a Special Representative to the Minister of Finance,
to recommend a process to determine the best securities regulatory
system for Canada’s needs and to identify the key issues to be

the "Wise Persons Committee" arising out of that process.
