Harold MacKay, O.C., Q.C. to speak at Conference Board of Canada conference on "Canada's Competitiveness in a Global Financial Marketplace"

Harold MacKay, O.C., Q.C., Vice-Chair of the Wise Persons' Committee on reforming Canada's financial services regulatory environment, will discuss the question: Does Regulatory Structure of Canada's Equity Market Need to be Changed?"

Canada is the only G7 country without a national securities commission. Many feel that the country's 13 commissions are "inconvenient, inefficient, and too expensive, and that they impose a competitive disadvantage on Canadian issuers" (conference brochure).

Some hold the view that a more harmonized system would better allow regional issues to be considered and provide better protection for junior companies. It could also create a competitive advantage for Canada's markets by fostering the growth of regional niche markets.

The conference will be held on December 4-5, 2003 at the Renaissance Toronto Hotel at Skydome in downtown Toronto. Visit www.conferenceboard.ca for more information.
