Opportunities for Students

The deadline for applications for 2009/10 Articling Student positions has now passed.

We will be accepting applications for 2009/10 summer students in early October 2008. Thanks for considering MLT.

Articling at MLT - Choosing a firm for your articles is an important and exciting first step in your legal career. You will want to seek advice from professors, fellow students and practicing lawyers to select a firm that shares your values and offers a rewarding professional environment. All firms are not the same, and we know that MLT offers you something special. We have a unique culture that emphasizes teamwork, cooperation and mutual support. The sophistication of our practice and our reputation for excellence flows directly from that culture. We work hard to maintain it.

The focus for articling and summer students at MLT is learning. Students are encouraged to take the time to learn about the law and its procedures, and your work experience will be varied. There will be a good deal of legal research, but you will also get broad "hands on" experience in everything from attending trials, hearings and examinations for discovery as junior counsel, to drafting correspondence, meeting with clients, developing strategies for negotiations and preparing commercial agreements. Your articling experience will involve a rotation designed to expose you to our major practice areas and as many of our lawyers and clients as possible. For the last number of years our Saskatchewan students have participated in one-month exchange programs with the Court of Queen's Bench and Court of Appeal.

We assign a partner who has expressed a particular interest in assisting young lawyers as a mentor to each student. We also assign an associate mentor to each student to serve as a resource person the student also can turn to for advice and guidance. The mentors’ role is to provide ongoing one-on-one guidance on office and practice procedures, client relations, file management, and ethics and professional responsibility. Mentors will also provide feedback on work performance and related issues. Our goal is to provide a working environment in which students feel comfortable working with and learning from all members of the firm. Even though mentors are assigned to each student, our “open door” policy encourages students to seek assistance from any lawyer in the firm.

Grow with Us - Our firm culture focuses on superior client service and an unwavering emphasis on high professional standards, collegiality, mutual respect and teamwork. We invite prospective articling students to refer to the current edition of Grow with Us for more information on the articling experience at MLT (please click on the cover). Print copies are available from any of our offices.

We encourage you to contact any of our articling students to determine whether MLT is the right fit for you:
