PRACTICING LAW AT MLT

We believe that our team-oriented culture makes MLT a special place to practice law. Take a few moments to look through this section to get to know us better.

A Profile of Our Firm

MLT has a long standing and nationally recognized reputation for excellence. We are a business-oriented and client focused law firm founded by M.A. MacPherson, Q.C. in 1920. Since that time we have been home to many leading figures in the legal profession and the Canadian judiciary.

MLT is a Western Canadian law firm of over 110 lawyers with offices in Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton. From our roots in Saskatchewan we expanded to Calgary in March of 2002 to better serve our clients. We opened in Edmonton in June 2006. We currently have nearly 40 lawyers in each of our Saskatchewan offices, and our Alberta offices also continue to grow, with nearly 20 lawyers in Calgary and 13 in Edmonton early in 2010. While our practice is primarily focused in Saskatchewan and Alberta, the global reach of many of our clients' enterprises sees us actively involved in a variety of assignments in other Canadian provinces, the United States of America and elsewhere in the world.

Globalization has drawn many of our clients into business ventures far beyond the geographic boundaries of Western Canada, and we are proud to continue representing them as they grow. MLT's commitment to the global marketplace is evidenced by our status as a founding member (and the only Saskatchewan representative) of Lex Mundi, which is the world's leading association of independent law firms. With over 15,000 lawyers worldwide, Lex Mundi promotes the exchange of information about legal practice developments around the globe.

MLT has a broad client base that includes individuals, small businesses, governments, public agencies, and major national and international companies. The scope of our clients' legal work regularly leads to our involvement in significant and professionally challenging projects encompassing a broad range of legal issues.

Most lawyers at MLT focus their practice in a particular area of the law. This allows the firm to connect our clients with practitioners who have substantial experience in a specific area of the law, and allows individual lawyers to concentrate on those aspects of their legal practice they enjoy most.

A critical feature of our practice philosophy is that we see clients as clients of the firm rather than of individual lawyers. This special perspective serves as the foundation of our teamwork philosophy. We match the special talents of our lawyers with the particular legal requirements of our clients. As a result, lawyers are typically drawn into files on the basis of their experience and interest. This approach ensures our clients receive the best possible advice.

We see our firm as more than just a business enterprise. Our lawyers are encouraged to participate in professional, social and public service activities outside the firm. Members of our firm play prominent roles as volunteers with local and national charities, artistic and cultural organizations, professional associations, and professional and amateur sports groups. We want our professionals to be well rounded and to be engaged in rewarding ways with their communities and families.

Key Practice Groups

The work of the firm centers on core practice areas including, but not limited to, the following:

Corporate / Commercial

MLT has widely recognized strength and depth in the corporate and commercial area of our legal practice. Our lawyers are actively involved in project development, corporate financing, securities, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial transactions of all kinds. By way of example, our Business Law Practice Group has, during the past few years alone, advised a major lender on its contractual arrangements and documentation related to its e-commerce initiative, assisted a major industrial client to establish new plants in the U.S., structured an investment hedge fund, participated in joint venture negotiations with respect to a new mine in northern Saskatchewan, advised numerous professionals with respect to the incorporation of their practices, assisted family businesses to restructure for succession planning, and piloted a substantial public debt offering by an international mining company.

Labour and Employment

Our highly regarded Labour and Employment Law Practice Group provides counsel to employers concerning all aspects of labour and employment law. We provide advice and representation with respect to collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, labour relations board applications, occupational health and safety matters and pension administration. The lawyers in this group have recently negotiated new collective agreements on behalf of a major public sector employer, secured an injunction to restrain picketing during a high profile strike, and appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court of Canada in a case regarding secondary picketing.

Litigation

Our Litigation Practice Group provides a complete range of litigation and dispute resolution services. We are widely known for the quality and effectiveness of our work in this area. Our litigation lawyers are involved in complex commercial disputes, a variety of professional negligence matters, tort and contract claims of all kinds, commercial insurance, professional liability, family law matters, major criminal law cases, and a wide variety of administrative and public law files. In recent years MLT's litigators have represented immigrants in a significant Charter case, defended claims arising from a major railroad accident, appeared as counsel in a precedent setting constitutional case in the Supreme Court of Canada, broken new ground on behalf of the victims of Residential School sexual abuse, and acted for investors from around the world with respect to the unlawful management of a large immigrant investor fund.

Tax Planning and Tax Dispute Resolution

Our accomplished Tax Group is the largest in Saskatchewan, and provides tax re-assessment and tax planning advice for both high-net worth individuals and corporate clients. The firm also carries on a significant litigation practice. The lawyers in this group recently won a Charter challenge relating to the authority of Canada Customs and Revenue Agency ("CCRA") auditors, successfully challenged a CCRA assessment of the value of an employee benefit, assisted residents of the United States to assess the impact of withholding tax on Canadian debt instruments and managed the tax consequences of a number of major corporate reorganizations.

Facilities and Technology

Our newly renovated offices are located in first class buildings. In Regina, we occupy three floors of McCallum Hill Tower I in the heart of downtown. Our Saskatoon office is centrally located in the top three floors of the Saskatoon Square, overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. Our new Calgary office is located on the 45th floor of the prestigious Canterra Tower in downtown Calgary.

MLT has state of the art technology. Each member of the firm has a computer connected to our local area network. This provides desktop access to web browsing, the internet, MLT's intranet and interoffice e-mail and faxing capability. All users also have desktop access to our CD-ROM library and internet access to commercial databases including Quicklaw, LexisNexis and WestlaweCARSWELL.

We see technology as a tool for helping us provide better service to our clients, and for promoting an effective and enriching work environment. We strive to make technology as friendly as possible. To this end we have developed customized manuals and retain an in-house trainer to ensure that users are able to familiarize themselves with our systems as quickly and comfortably as possible. We also have full time computer specialists on staff at all times.

In addition to our lawyers and articling students, MLT employs approximately 80 people in various administrative and support roles. This includes paralegals working in litigation, real estate, corporate law, and wills and estates. We also employ full-time court runners. This experienced group of individuals works closely with our students and lawyers to ensure they can work productively and effectively. Our libraries are managed by a full-time professional law librarian who is always available to assist lawyers and students with research questions and problems.

Legal Education and Career Development

Continuing legal education is at the heart of your practice with MLT. We offer a variety of in-house seminars and meetings, including monthly "Litigation Lunches" where our litigation lawyers gather for discussion of practice issues, and "Quality Circle" sessions where our commercial practitioners explore legal and practice issues of concern to them. Our lawyers are also encouraged to attend Law Society, Canadian Bar Association and other continuing legal education seminars at the expense of the firm.

Social Activities

The practice of law involves hard work, but we also want you to experience the social dimension of life at the firm. We have an annual retreat where all lawyers and students enjoy a relaxed weekend at a resort destination. We have annual Christmas parties, family picnics, a children's party, sporting events and a variety of informal social events. At the firm's expense, lawyers and students are also encouraged to attend local Bar Association dinners and other events.

Selection Criteria

We hire professionals whose prior endeavors and personal qualities demonstrate the potential for them to become outstanding lawyers and citizens. This means not only proven academic achievement, but also and interest in our business and in the wider community.

We value and reward professionals who demonstrate initiative, imagination, drive and integrity. Of equal importance, we are looking for real team players. This is the case both because of how we approach the practice of law and because MLT is a close knit community that strives to avoid the impersonal atmosphere that sometimes prevails in larger firms.
